Pelvic Mesh Complications
In the recent years, the inclusion of surgical mesh has been widely utilized in most pelvic and vaginal surgeries. However, many operations have failed due to deficient and infected mesh, which caused travsvaginal mesh complications on women who generally sought for a cure.
Based on medical studies conducted, the concept of the surgical mesh is somehow flawed. Moreover, synthetic mesh filters nonylphenol, an organic compound known to be an endocrine disruptor and a catalyst of estrogen effect.
Nonylphenol instigates thymocyte apoptosis, a process of programmed cell death that leads to an immune disease.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the compound is toxic to most organisms. With many pelvic mesh complications associated with synthetic mesh, it is clearly life threatening.
Since 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been releasing safety communications about the use of mesh in pelvic and vaginal surgeries. In a span of three years, the FDA received thousands of reports that deal with the problems experienced by most patients after having mesh implanted.
Moreover, manufacturers like Bard Avaulta and Boston Scientific have been investigated after numerous mesh lawsuits have been filed due to defects and infections associated with its products.
Surgical mesh products are allowed since the FDA has not yet come up with a final decision as to whether the products would be recalled or not. However, it is expected that there would be a resolution on the safety and effectiveness of mesh in September 2011.
Pelvic Mesh Complications Overview
The implantation of pelvic mesh is life threatening for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) patients, for the dislocation of the material only worsens the condition of the organs. Many problems associated with the mesh resulted to weakening the support of the urinary organs’ for the vagina, and may eventually affect the adjacent organs’ bodily functions as well.
After a surgery, the POP prognosis is that patients should avoid activities that involve pressure in the pelvic and rectal area in order to avoid any problem. However, this is not often the case when pelvic mesh is involved.
