Pelvic Mesh Attorney
Since being approved for the correction of two new conditions commonly found in women, POP and SUI, pelvic mesh has proved to be a bane, not a boon. By 2008, the FDA said that over one thousand cases of complications concerning the implants and by 2010, there were more than 500 lawsuits filed against the manufacturers of the devices and an additional 1,500 complication reports. Companies like Bard Avulta have contended that a recall isn’t necessary, that additional education on the part of patients, and the training of the surgeons using the devices would be sufficient their pelvic mesh attorney claimed.
Complications stemming from the implants can include dyspareunia, (pain during intercourse,) bleeding, and some cases of other internal organs surrounding the implant being affected. These organs can include the bladder and intestines. Some recurrence of POP and SUI has been reported and even instances of perforating through the vaginal walls. However, due to the actions of consumer advocates, the public is becoming more aware of the situation and educating themselves.
Pelvic Mesh Attorney Overview
In a recent meeting, the FDA panel charged with looking into the mesh complications said that while a recall at this time may be an extreme measure, upgrading the devices category to a high-risk category would be considered. For the moment though, manufacturers already approved for it will still be able to market the implants. The category upgrade could take as long as three years to complete, but if implemented, would require that manufacturers supply more data from clinical trials and lab testing.
One victim represented by a pelvic mesh attorney told the panel that after two years and six surgeries, “We the injured became your guinea pigs and your post-market trials.” Consumer advocates are calling for a registry to be created for the study, a measure that many on the panel agreed with. However, panelists opposed to this believe that if this measure is taken the industries advancement agenda could be slowed from progressing.
